Winnipeg winter brings slush, grit and salt into a home even when everyone tries to be careful. A small system at the door can protect the rest of the space and cut down on daily cleaning.
Set up the landing zone
Place a mat at the entrance and a tray where wet boots can dry. Keep hooks or a basket nearby for coats, gloves and small items. Empty standing water from the tray before it spills onto the floor.
Remove grit before mopping
Sweep or vacuum loose grit first. Dragging it across a hard floor with a wet mop can leave marks. Then use a floor cleaner suitable for the material, following its label. Avoid leaving excess water on wood or laminate surfaces.
Give busy areas a short reset
During heavy snow or thaw days, wipe the entry floor and boot tray more often than the rest of the house. A weekly cleaning visit can then focus on the broader kitchen, bathroom and living areas rather than spending all its time catching up at the door.
If salt residue has built up around an entrance, mention it when booking regular cleaning. We can make the entryway a priority within the visit.
